India weighs Su-30MKI upgrade for 300-km-class Russian air-to-air missile
India is considering a major weapons-integration programme for its Su-30MKI fighter fleet that could significantly expand the Indian Air Force’s ability to engage airborne targets at very long distances.
The proposed upgrade involves modifying the Russian-origin Su-30MKI to carry the RVV-BD long-range air-to-air missile, a weapon associated with Russia’s R-37M missile family. The proposal is reportedly set to come before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the Defence Ministry’s highest decision-making body for major defence procurement.
If approved and successfully integrated, the capability would add another long-range weapon option to one of the IAF’s largest fighter fleets.

A new long-range weapon for the Su-30MKI
The RVV-BD is designed for engagements at distances far beyond those normally associated with conventional fighter-launched air-to-air missiles. Reports have placed its range at around 300 kilometres, although the practical engagement distance can vary considerably depending on launch conditions, target altitude, speed, manoeuvring and other factors.
The missile is particularly intended for engaging large or high-value airborne assets. These can include airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, reconnaissance platforms and other support aircraft operating away from the main fighter battle.
The weapon is also reported to have a terminal speed approaching Mach 6, giving it considerable kinetic energy as it closes on a target.
Su-30MKI integration would require extensive changes
Putting the RVV-BD on the Su-30MKI would involve considerably more than installing a new missile on an external hardpoint.
The fighter would require modifications to its avionics, weapons-management architecture and software. Its radar and fire-control systems would also need to exchange the necessary information with the missile during an engagement.
Such integration would require engineering, flight testing and operational validation before the capability could be introduced into regular IAF service.
The proposal comes at a time when India's Su-30MKI fleet is already being upgraded with newer avionics, sensors and other systems intended to improve its combat effectiveness.
Why long-range missiles matter
One of the major attractions of the RVV-BD is its potential ability to hold valuable enemy aircraft at risk from considerable distances.
AEW&C aircraft are particularly important because they provide airborne surveillance, command and control, and targeting support to fighter formations. They can operate behind the forward fighter line while extending the situational awareness of an air force.
A very-long-range missile could therefore force such aircraft to remain farther away from the combat area or expose them to increased risk.
For the IAF, this would broaden the Su-30MKI’s role beyond traditional fighter-versus-fighter engagements and provide an additional tool for targeting high-value support aircraft.
RVV-BD would complement, not replace, Indian missiles
The reported interest in the Russian missile does not indicate a shift away from India’s indigenous air-to-air weapons programme.
The IAF is continuing to develop longer-range variants of the Astra missile family through the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). At the same time, India's Rafale fleet already uses the French Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.
The three systems represent different approaches to long-range aerial warfare. The RVV-BD would offer a very-long-range capability, while weapons such as Meteor and future Astra variants provide other combinations of range, propulsion, guidance and manoeuvrability.
India is consequently moving toward a diversified air-to-air missile inventory rather than relying on a single long-range weapon.
Why the Su-30MKI is central to the plan
India operates more than 260 Su-30MKIs, making the fighter a crucial component of the IAF's combat strength.
The aircraft's large size, substantial weapons-carrying capacity and continuing modernisation make it a logical platform for integrating heavier and longer-range weapons.
If the RVV-BD integration proceeds, the upgrade could give a significant portion of the IAF's frontline fighter fleet a new long-range engagement option.
The proposal also highlights India's broader effort to extend the reach of its air-combat capabilities by combining upgraded Russian-origin fighters with French weaponry and increasingly advanced indigenous missile systems.
