IRCTC Introduces Revamped Ticket Booking Website with Faster Tatkal Service and New Features

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to roll out a redesigned version of its online ticket booking platform, aiming to provide a faster and more user-friendly experience for passengers. The upgraded website is expected to improve Tatkal ticket bookings by handling significantly higher traffic and offering several new features.

While the launch is expected to take place on July 15, some reports indicate the rollout could be delayed until the second week of August.

Improved User Interface

The redesigned portal features a cleaner layout intended to simplify the booking process. Passengers can expect fewer pop-up windows, reduced on-screen clutter, and fewer CAPTCHA interruptions, particularly during high-demand Tatkal booking periods.

The updated website will also introduce a seat and berth selection option, allowing passengers to choose their preferred accommodation while booking, subject to availability.

Fare Calendar and Better Seat Availability

A new fare calendar will enable travellers to compare ticket prices across multiple travel dates before confirming their reservations. Additionally, seat availability for all travel classes—including Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier, and others—will be displayed on a single screen, eliminating the need to search each class separately.

Support for Multiple Languages

To improve accessibility, the platform will support several Indian languages, making online ticket booking easier for passengers across different regions. Concession bookings for categories such as Divyangjan passengers, students, and patients will also be integrated into a single streamlined process.

Enhanced Capacity for Tatkal Bookings

The biggest improvement comes in the platform’s technical infrastructure. The upgraded system has been designed to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a substantial increase from the current capacity of approximately 32,000 bookings per minute.

The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) backend is also being upgraded to handle more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute, compared to around 4 lakh currently. The higher processing capacity is expected to reduce website slowdowns, failed transactions, and booking errors during peak demand, especially during Tatkal booking hours.

Focus on Better Passenger Experience

The decision to modernise the IRCTC website follows concerns raised by users over the existing platform's performance during ticket bookings. The upgraded portal aims to offer a smoother, faster, and more reliable booking experience while accommodating the growing number of railway passengers using digital services.
