Governor Ramesh Bais also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi earlier this week but what transpired in those meetings is not known. Judge 'surprised' at Trump claim he has no documents sought in probe

Image
A New York judge expressed surprise on Friday that Donald Trump, a man he described as perhaps the world’s most famous real estate developer, was unable to provide any documents sought in a probe of the Trump Organization, his family company. Justice Arthur Engoron in New York state court in Manhattan said at a virtual hearing that he would go on holding the former U.S. president in contempt of court and fine him $10,000 a day despite a request from Trump’s lawyer to lift both orders. “He’s Donald Trump, the most famous real estate developer in the world, arguably,” the judge said. “I am surprised he doesn’t seem to have any documents; they’re all with the organization.” On Monday, Engoron issued the orders over Trump’s failure to comply with New York Attorney General Letitia James’ subpoena for documents. On Wednesday, Trump signed an affidavit saying he did not believe he had any relevant documents and, if there were any documents, the Trump Organization would have them. On Friday,

Gustavo de Arístegui analysed in the microphones of the programme the gesture that King Mohamed VI made to Pedro Sánchez by inviting him to an iftar in the palace. On the other hand, the Spanish diplomat addressed the question of whether a parallel can be drawn between the situation in the Sahara and Ceuta and Melilla.  Gustavo de Aristegui What is your impression of what has happened in recent days between Spain and Morocco? First of all, I would like to take up something we have talked about on previous occasions, and that is that foreign policy has to be a state policy, a policy of great consensus. I am afraid that, for the last 20 years or so, everyone puts the turnin

The Turkish president’s last visit to Saudi Arabia was in 2017 during which he met King Salman and performed Umrah. Officials in both countries have been working on a rapprochement for months, with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu visiting Saudi Arabia in May last year. FAB first-quarter profit at record high after Magnati stake sale

Image
Net income for the first three months of the year climbed to $1.4bn First Abu Dhabi Bank, the UAE’s largest lender by assets, more than doubled its first-quarter net income to a record high, driven by the sale of its majority stake in its payments business and improved performance of the bank’s core business. Net profit attributable to shareholders for the three months to the end of March surged to Dh5.1 billion ($1.4bn), the lender said in a statement on Thursday to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, where its shares are traded. Quarterly income includes a Dh2.8bn net gain from the sale of a majority stake in its payments business Magnati to New York-listed Brookfield Business Partners. The sale announced in February valued Magnati at about $1.15bn. FAB’s first-quarter earnings beat Arqaam Capital’s net profit forecast of Dh3.05bn. EFG Hermes had estimated its quarterly net income at Dh3.1bn. Core underlying operational performance also boosted the bank’s profitability, which was

Johnny Depp dropped from 'Pirates of the Caribbean' over abuse claims, ex-agent testifies

Image
Johnny Depp was dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise because of the domestic abuse allegations made by Amber Heard, his former Hollywood agent said on Wednesday, backing up the actor’s claim against his ex-wife. “My opinion is that it was related to the accusations that Amber has made,” Christian Carino, who works for Creative Arts Agency, said in a videotaped deposition in the defamation suit filed by Depp against Heard. Depp filed a defamation case against Heard over a column she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018 in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse”. Heard, 36, never named Depp, 58, but he sued her for implying he was a domestic abuser and is seeking $50 million in damages. Texas-born Heard countersued, asking for $100m, claiming she suffered “rampant physical violence and abuse” at his hands. Depp filed the defamation complaint in the US after losing a separate libel case in London in November 2020 that he brou

Putin warns West of lightning retaliation for intervention in Ukraine

Image
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of lightning-fast retaliation if countries interfere in Ukraine, while U.S. President Joe Biden was set to comment on Thursday in support of Ukraine’s fight against “Russia’s brutal war”. Russia has told the United States to stop sending arms to Ukraine, saying large Western deliveries of weapons were inflaming the conflict. Addressing lawmakers in St Petersburg on Wednesday, Putin said the West wanted to cut Russia up into different pieces and accused it of pushing Ukraine into conflict with Russia. “If someone intends to intervene in the ongoing events from the outside, and create strategic threats for Russia that are unacceptable to us, they should know that our retaliatory strikes will be lightning-fast,” said Putin, according to video of his address supplied by Russian media. “We have all the tools for this, things no one else can boast of having now. And we will not boast, we will use them if necessary. And I want everyone to know that.”

South Korea Inc heaps added pressure on Samsung

Image
Peer pressure might be a good thing for Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) . The $350 billion conglomerate’s 51% rise in quarterly operating profit underscores its dependence on memory chips. Local competitors Hyundai (005380.KS) , SK (034730.KS) and LG (003550.KS) are moving faster to capitalise on new markets. Maybe that’ll be a call to action. Strong demand for high-margin DRAM and NAND chips used in phones, PCs and data centre servers powered another strong quarter at South Korea’s biggest company. Operating profit in Samsung’s semiconductor division, which also houses smaller foundry and microprocessor businesses, surged 150% from a year earlier to $6.7 billion in the three months ending March 31. Chips stand apart at Samsung. Decent sales of its latest flagship Galaxy model weren’t enough to overcome other challenges in the mobile and devices unit, where operating profit tumbled 17% from a year earlier. Concerns about supply-chain snarls, weak memory prices and geopolitical unce

Canada lynx protections deal sealed by US and environmentalists

Image
Biden administration reverses Trump-era decision saying cat population had sufficiently recovered US wildlife officials have agreed to craft a new habitat plan for the snow-loving Canada lynx that could include more land in Colorado and other western states where the rare animals would be protected. A legal agreement made public on Tuesday said that the US Fish and Wildlife Service faces a 2024 deadline to draft the new plan for the wild cats after settling a legal challenge from two environmental groups — Wild Earth Guardians and Wilderness Workshop. US District Judge Dana Christensen issued an order late on Monday approving the settlement. The groups sued to enforce a prior court ruling from Ms Christensen that said federal officials wrongly excluded areas of Colorado, Montana and Idaho when they designated almost 104,000 square kilometres in 2014 as critical for the lynx’s long-term survival. US immigration chief unveils border plan as crisis worsens

Image
US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday defended the Biden administration’s handling of immigration, amid a surge at the Mexico border that is expected to grow when pandemic limits are dropped. “We inherited a broken and dismantled system that is already under strain,” Mr Mayorkas told the House appropriations homeland security subcommittee. “It is not built to manage the current levels and types of migratory flows.” He urged Congress to pass long-term reforms. His testimony came as the administration locked horns with a federal court in Louisiana that granted a request by Republican-controlled states to temporarily halt their planning to wind down Title 42. The order prevents the government from taking any action before a hearing on May 13 to determine whether Title 42 can be lifted. Mr Mayorkas set out a blueprint to boost border personnel, strike at people smugglers, speed up processing and increase holding capacity, as he warned the worst was yet to come. “A

Image
In an exclusive interview, Jihad Azour, director of the fund’s Middle East and Central Asia Department, says rising prices risk social stability in lower-income countries Gathering international co-operation will be necessary to help prevent a food crisis in the Middle East and North Africa this year as the war in Ukraine drives prices higher and risks supply, the IMF ’s regional director said. On Wednesday, the fund released its Middle East and Central Asia Regional Economic Outlook, which shows a divergent picture in 2022 for the region, with oil exporters such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia set to earn higher revenue this year compared with 2021, thanks to higher oil prices. Uncertainty is also increasing with the duration of the war in Ukraine, a significant factor in how the rest of Mena will fare amid rising inflation and growing food insecurity. Jihad Azour, director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the IMF, told the Business Extra podcast that co-operation is
